THE NEW TRANSAXLE

The new transaxle arrived a couple of weeks ago! Here it is!

The pic below was my first view of the transaxle as I opened the crate.

The pic below shows a side view of the transaxle. The billet side plate is on view. The large brass looking bolt in the side plate is a thrust bolt which stops the crownwheel moving too far then the pinion forces it sideways.

The pic below shows my new adapter plate fitted to the transaxle. The transaxle is the wrong way up to how it sits in the car. I'll say more about the adapter plate later.

As I said in the previous post it is a G95/50. The is the box that is used in the 996 turbo, GT2, GT3 and Porsche Cup racers. This one uses the case from a 996 turbo. All the internals are new. It has steel synchros, billet steel selector forks a custom limited slip diff, custom 5th and 6th gears and a billet aluminium side plate.

I took the transaxle to work to spray it yellow. This makes it easier to keep it clean and stops the aluminium oxidising. A pic below in yellow.

The transaxle is of the G50 type. This means it needs a different adapter plate to my old G96. The adapter plate has come from Gardner Douglas sportscars in Nottinghamshire. Andy Burrows is the owner and design engineer and a very helpfull and likeable man.

Along with the new adpater plate I am also fitting a new triple plate clutch to cope with all the torque. The old one started to slip on the last dyno session. There will also be a new starter motor as it now fits on the gearbox side and not on the engine side as before.

Below is a pic of the new adapter plate from Gardner Douglas sportscars. The four studs which hold the transaxle on came in bare metal, so I had them plated by a local company.

Below is a pic of the new triple plate organic clutch as supplied by Gardner Douglas. It is made by Super Clutch in the UK.

Along with the new clutch is a matched lightweight flywheel and ring gear. The pic below shows these new parts. Compared to the old flywheel and clutch it is 7.1kg lighter. The old one was 16.5kg and the new one is 9.4kg.
